Blast doors or bomb proof doors are designed to protect personnel, possessions or property in the event of an explosion or bomb blast. Depending on the type of protection required, blast doors have to have sufficiently strong hinges and locking mechanisms to ensure that the doors themselves function and protect, but also be practical and not too clumsy to open and close.

A variety of locking arrangements are available including centre handwheel or multi-lever latching, with either hydraulic, pneumatic, electronic or manual operation. Together with the locking systems, various seals are available for blast doors from general weather tight seals all the way up to air tight seals which would prevent chemical or toxic gas penetration.
